Mission and Paradox

Short-Term Mission

I wrote about this in the Introduction (under Documents), but I would like to ask you about it. I think we are facing an historical shift in mission perceptions. The last one was the incredible growth in the 20th century of independent, non-denominational and specialized mission agencies that quickly became  significant "competitors" with historic denominational mission.

Now, the statistics are a bit uncertain, but estimates like those of Robert Priest of Trinity Evangelical Seminary suggest more than 1.5 million US Christians going on one week to one month mission trips or work teams every year - more than 1/2 to Mexico. So, when asked, "What is World Mission?", my guess is that many would answer, "It's the mission teams we send out from our congregation every summer." Is this the future of US mission?

What do you think? How would you assess this phenomenon?
